I was watching CNN in the gym this afternoon and they were campaigning hard to be the first to a million followers. The anchors kept using a possesive terms like “We only need a few thousand more” or “Our twitter feed is better” etc. What total jerks — they’ve never personally contributed to the twitter converstion.

In fact it’s not really their twitter feed at all (@cnnbrk). Sure they now own it, but it was set up by a guy named James Cox who didn’t even work for CNN. They bought in when it was already a six figure account.

What’s worse, the @cnnbrk feed is just a robot that pumps out headlines — it doesn’t even offer links. The CNN feed totally flies in the face of what social media is about. There is absolutely no inteaction with their readers (in fact they only follow 6 people — all CNN correspondents, plus James Cox!)

CNN lost before this race even began.

But this race does signify something bigger — a changing of the guard. Proof that a single individual (granted a well-known celebrity) can easily turn the power of the web to match that of an established media giant.

At first I dismissed this as nothing more than a publicity stunt by that Punk’d guy. But then I watched his YouTube video, and he really nailed it — this is about a choice between gatekeepers (CNN) or democratizastion (the everyman).

I’m glad Kutcher kicked CNN’s ass. They deserved it. Welcome to the new dawn.

Here’s a pic of the moment it happened (earlier today): Twitpic link
